Ok I give this place a three because the food was great and the sauce was amazing but the service and temperature of the restaurant was not so great. So we get there around 7pm and immediately when I walk in can tell the place is HOT(87 degrees) So we are a family of 4 this should be easy well nope! We wait and wait to be seated not because a ton of people were ahead of us but because the wait staff is waiting tables ringing up bills and seating guests. They then seat us and forget we are there and finally someone comes by and apologizes and we order water and our food and wait and wait. Finally I ask for our water and our waitress forgot! LOL The food comes and it is great! I would give it another chance!! Hope the wait staff can get it figured out.

SERVICE WAS HORRIBLE. Upon arrival our party waited at the host stand for 20 mins without being greeted. Mean while numerous staff members walked by but would not greet and/or take your name for a table. Finally we were sat and waited again for a server to take our drink order. We placed our dinner order and after 45 mins asked our waitress when it would be coming out. We were told it was taking so long because someone in our party ordered BBQ nachos and "the chips take a while to cook". Keep in mind this is an appetizer. We knew this was an excuse but didn't press the issue. After waiting for a total hour with no food we asked our server for an update on our dinner and were told the order had never been placed. Shocked...we asked if they could provide an estimated time on when it would be ready. Our server checked with management and came back to report she did not wasn't sure how long it would be. We asked to speak with a manager and were told he was busy. After waiting an hour and fifteen mins we left without eating. I have never been to a restaurant with such horrible service. I understand that mistakes happen but am still shocked that a manager was too busy to speak with us after receiving this type of service. I WILL NEVER RETURN HERE!!!

Waited all week to go only open Thursday - Sunday and worth it. Had the full rack of ribs and were the best I have had in a long time. The spicy BBQ sauce went well with them. We just got our order in at 6:30 and within minutes they ran out of all BBQ items. Staff was excellent giving out gift certificates to all that were seated. Go early if going there is limited places in the area with good food.

The Brunswick stew or baked beans make a meal in themselves, but as one or two sides, they turn a hearty meal into a southern feast.

I disagree with most of my fellow yelpers on the spotted pig. Place was clean, wait staff friendly and service fast, all pluses. The BBQ tender but bland when it came to taste. Beef brisket tender, moist but tasted like a good crock pot roast instead of brisket. Ribs were done well enough but they too lack seasoning. The BBQ sauces where just ok and lacked variety. So if your looking for BBQ that's truly out standing keep looking, cause this is mostly average Q at best.

We have been coming to this place for years. I feel that it has gone downhill. I was very disappointed.

The BBQ is to die for. Really the best and very large portions. They only drawback is that they are only open four days each week. They have a deep sink in the dining area for you to wash up! Exit 1 on I-85 in South Carolina Head north on 11 for about 5 miles. It is on the right and you can drive past it if you don't see the pig in the sky.

I would put this on a 3.5 as far as the overall BBQ taste goes so I wrestled as to whether I should be on a 3 or 4 - and I'm going to come out a 4 because this place is a little different than your average BBQ. I like the fact that they have fried pickles, French fries and jalapeno poppers - and desserts - in addition to pretty good BBQ. The décor is comfy and homey as well. There are some pretty good elements to the BBQ that give it that push as well. If I had a reason to push it down to a 3.0 it would be because it's inconsistent - super clean some days while other days (like the last trip) the floor and tables are not kept up with after busy times. The meats are also somewhat inconsistent being that sometimes the chicken has come out 4.5 star and sometimes 3.5 star. The ribs are a pretty constant 3 star - which should be the shining glory of a BBQ place, but the brisket is what you come for and it's a 4.5 consistently. This place is a good destination spot if you want brisket and chicken. The sides always come out fresh and tasty - I like the 'natural cut' style fries, okra seems to be fresh not frozen. the Brunswick stew is very chunky, although watery, has a fairly unique taste. Some may like it, while I prefer more traditional Brunswick stews. There are three sauces, a sweet, spicy, and a mustard base. The sweet was a little too plain for me, while the spicy is a pepper base mixed with the sauce and is good. The mustard sauce is also a sweeter mustard base, compliments the chicken well. The décor is above average for a 4 star BBW, it's a lodge atmosphere with a large fireplace. 5 stars on the BBQ décor. the desserts - well, a dessert has to wow me to get my attention and they really do not do it for me much more than average. But it's nice that they offer it and it's possible the pie I had was just not a good choice, it was overly whipped creamed. Someday I might find myself knocking down to a 3 star if the inconsistencies continue... but for now, a 4 star I think is a fair land.

We tried this place last night on the way to our place at Lake Hartwell. (Well it is sort of on the way.) It was a good excuse to go one exit into SC to pick up some fireworks and some decent BBQ. It's about five miles east of 85 off of exit 1 in SC - just over the Lake Hartwell bridge. The place is clean, and the staff is friendly. We got there about 8 PM on a Thursday evening and there were probably 2 - 3 tables still seated when we got there. I ordered the pulled pork plate and my wife ordered the beef brisket. Both were good. I got the Brunswick stew and fried okra, and my wife got onion rings and fried okra. The Brunswick stew was good (not the best ever) and the okra was just Ok. Not sure if it was fresh or frozen. They have beer, which is a bonus in these parts. Interesting pricing, though. They have Natural Light for $1 a can, but if you want IPA, it will set you back $4 a beer. Must be hard to get in Fairplay, SC. Probably the highlight of the meal was the pie. They had Key Lime, Coconut, Chocolate & Peanut butter, and I think one other kind of pie. We took two slices to go (Key Lime & Coconut) and they were excellent. We will likely be back - it is a good addition to the limited restaurant choices on (or near) Lake Hartwell.

Amazing awesome food. The pulled pork was moist, tasty and perfect. The mustard, spicy and sweet sauce choices were all wonderful! Onion rings, baked beans, okra, tea-- it was all delicious! Decor was super fun- great big stone fireplace, giant elk head mounted above, and fun novelty - big sink at far wall for washing up after the finger licking. Our family loved it all!

Really great hush puppies! I liked that they felt hand battered. The Double D sandwich was good but a little too big to finish. Sadly no room for dessert, but the pies looked beautiful! Really great atmosphere, too. You can see cows in the pasture behind the restaurant when you roll in!

Great BBQ all their meats are very good the sides are great as well. The service when busy is the low spot so I call my orders in and use the drive through. You won't find better BBQ in the area than the Pig.
(4)Teresa D.
The double d sandwich is amazing! Brisket and pulled pork deliciousness!

The coleslaw has green pepper in it and it really adds something. The Brunswick stew was very meaty without being greasy. everything we had was delicious. we had a brisket sandwich and a pulled pork sandwich. service was great. it could have been a little bit cooler inside but we will return next time we are in the area . I highly recommend it. The parking lot is gravel and has a very steep entrance so I don't recommend it if you're on a motorcycle unless you're on a cruiser and/or extremely skilled . On the date of our visit they were not accepting American Express so if that is your preferred method of payment you might want to call first. However they do take other credit cards

On this stretch of 85, there is not much of anything to eat. "Culinary wasteland" is pretty accurate. But The Spotted Pig is worth the 5 minute drive off exit 1. The pulled pork is so tender and tastey you don't need to add BBQ sauce. The baked beans are just as good as is the Brunswick stew. The service is friendly as well. We've eaten there twice in one weekend on our way from Atlanta to Columbia. Highly suggest you try it.

I'm sticking with 5 stars. This place does fly in the face of the BBQ theory stating that "good BBQ can only be found in locations unsafe for travel after dark"... It's good and it's clean, which goes against BBQ theories requiring some amount of grease to be deposited on all interior surfaces of the restaurant being rated... It also doesn't reek of smoke. No burning eyes (one of my favorite places cannot be used by anyone with water permeable contact lenses) and if you want to wear that shirt again you need a dry cleaner to remove the smoke smell... SO, you don't need a concealed carry permit, disinfectant, or gas mask to enjoy really good BBQ. It's unconventional for true BBQ lovers, but it justifies a 5 in my book. Had the beef brisket tonight - we got there early just to make certain they were not sold out. It was excellent. Nice red smoke line 3/8 of an inch into the surface of the beef. So tender you needed only a plastic fork... BTW real BBQ is best when using a cheap plastic fork. I had their hush puppies. ...and I know for some weird reason people think you need two slices of white bread with real BBQ - not true. Hush puppies are better. If I have to complain - it would be that they run out of brisket early in the game. Maybe it's hard to keep fresh. Maybe they are pessimistic about sales of beef. Maybe they just sell out because it's good. Hey, I saw a review complaining that they have only a few bland beers to offer. Not true any more. They had a number of decent brews for those inclined to imbibe. I must dispel this rumor propagated by many reviewers that there is a "sink" or "long horse troth" mounted to the wall as a service for patrons with BBQ sauce slathered on their fingers, hands, and perhaps forearms... There is an iron and porcelain receptacle, but folks, its not designed to water horses or serve as a source of hydration at all. It's on the other end of the hydration cycle. It's a urinal. It's cool. And it was purchased new and unused, (Yep I asked) so it's clean... but it's an old fashioned urinal like you might have found in a 1920's prison restroom or some such other unsophisticated location. My wife says we should buy one for our garage. Why, I ask, so we can wash our dogs in it she says. OK, We do have a dachshund, so long porcelain kinda fits. No way though, not in the garage, not where people can see.

Good food. Horrible service. We stood in line for over 30 min just to be seated. They weren't even that busy, there was Atleast 5 empty tables available always they just wouldn't sit anyone. Once we ordered it took another 30 min to get the food an the kids that were with us were restless an one fell asleep. There was 4 adults an 3 children, all of this an we called 2 hours ahead an made a reservation. They also were out of 5 different things all of which most of us planned to order. If they want to make more busy they need to be prepared for it & willing to hire more people and Atleast sit ppl wanting to order. There was only two waiters! Which is the businesses fault. We tipped our waiter $11 because we felt bad he had no help.

Wow! Great find in the boondocks on the Georgia/ South Carolina boarder. The giant fireplace, pig decor and hand washing sink in the main dining room add to the down home BBQ ambiance. Their three sauces (spicy, sweet & mustard) are all delicious but my favorite was the sweet for the awesomely crispy onion rings and the spicy sauce for the tender pork. Worth the drive!

For openers, if you agree with the Brown Shoe Gourmet that truly great barbecue can only be found in places where you wouldn't go at night, have bars on the windows, just enough grease to write your name on the table top and have tshirts for sale... then the Spotted Pig isn't great - but it is good, very good. The place a huge barn like building (with a horse trough sink inside to wash your hands after eating) is maybe 3 miles west of I-85 on the first exit over the Georgia line in South Carolina. They're known for their brisket which is the good news; the bad news is that they frequently sell out of it... as they had during my visit. The ribs and pulled pork were both good to excellent: moist, good smoke flavor, and flavored with your choice of three sauces: spicy, mustard and sweet. The spicy wasn't too... Prices are on the fair to low side. A sandwich, fries (frozen - don't get them) and tea for $6.75. A half slab St. Louis cut ribs with a couple sides is $15.50 Opt for their slaw or baked beans(big chunks of pork) - both excellent, ditto the Brunswick stew. The Spotted Pig also has barbecue chicken, and for reasons known only to them, some fried fish. What they also have are some mile high pies (to be tried next time) and free pork bones for your dog, but asking for a donation to their local humane society. Friendly wait staff provides warm welcome and prompt refills. If you're on I-85, hungry for some good barbecue, give them a shot ... but be aware they're only open Thursday through Saturday, and on Sundays until 4. Have added the Spotted Pig tshirt to my collection of more than 200, will be back the next time I'm heading north to try their brisket. A fifth star will be provided they have some brisket and it's as good as I've been told.

The stretch of I-85 approaching the Georgia-South Carolina border is a culinary wasteland, where hungry travelers must resign themselves to a choice of fast food, truckstops or fireworks. Or so I thought, until we noticed a review for The Spotted Pig. Open just Thursday through Saturday, the Pig was a clutch stop on our recent drive from Atlanta to Asheville. Between two people, we had pulled pork, ribs, coleslaw, brunswick stew, fries, and two of the mini corn muffins that come with each plate. As far as comparisons go, Spotted Pig is technically sound, but on flavors, it doesn't stack up with the big dogs of southern bbq. I got fall-off-the-bone ribs with a nice smoke ring to them, but they weren't super-succulent, and lacked a well-developed smokey flavor. The pulled pork had some of the same shortcomings, and the brunswick stew and cornbread were generally uninspired. Coleslaw wasn't especially mayo-y or vinegar-heavy -- more of a slightly sweet cold salad, which made a nice counterpoint. And the three sauces (hot, sweet & mustard-based) are acceptable, but not so amazing you'll want to drink them or anyting. All that said, the service was friendly, the meal was cheap (under $10 pp), it was clean and well lit, and it's the best food for miles around. If you're hungry and in the area, pull off at exit 1 and drive those four miles up the road. Your taste buds will thank you.

I thought that by moving to the Carolina's I would find Great BBQ and Fried Chicken restaurants.... So far I have been proven mostly wrong ( I am still looking for a good to great piece of Fried Chicken). anyway on our way back from visiting friends in GA. we were hungry and found the Spotted Pig and decided to give it a try. YEAH!!!! So far it has the best BBQ we have found (besides home made). My friend had the Brisket and I tried the ribs. They were very good. The only complaints I had were the corn muffins were extremly dry and my pet complaint is no good beers.....only carried Bud and Miller... You would think that some restaurants would try to at least carry Negro Modelo, Mooshead or Scarecrow... I would have no problem paying a little more for a "good to me" beer or ale. Oh yes before I forget. For those who are interested (My daughter, etyc.) they do have Fried Pickles.....

The hush puppies were just fried corn meal with nothing more, we all tried one and left 8 in the basket. I wanted beef brisket, but they ran out at 7pm. Had the pull pork and it was very good. Beans were a little under cooked. Server refilled the Ice Tea, but the sweet tea wasn't sweet, like they forgot to add sugar! Desert is one the best things things, huge piece of pie that is good for $3.50. Final thoughts, go to Brasstown BBQ that is only open two nights Fri & Sat. and you'll get good service, good food everytime. This place is just OK and not worth the 3 to 4 stars folks gave it.

I think this place is the best BBQ in SC. I have lived here 4 years and have finally found a spot I want to go back to often. The brisket is the best I've ever had, not greasy at all just great smokey flavor cooked to perfection. The only time I will drive to Atlanta is when they are open so we can stop on the way back home. I agree about the beer selection below, a few more interesting selections and a couple good brews on tap would be great.

I love BBQ and I am now in love with the Spotted Pig BBQ. I just finished my half a slab of ribs, baked beans, and coleslaw; what a fantastic meal and great way to start a great weekend. The ribs are dry rubbed and smoked. The meat is tender and you can see the smoke line in the meat as you eat your way across each rib. The flavor is just spicy enough that although they offer 3 different sauces (smoky sweat, vinegar mustard, and hot spicy) the ribs don't need it - they stand alone with their own flavor. The baked beans are another favorite of mine; its 4 different beans in a brown sugar spicy sauce. The coleslaw is also good with a little kick. What I like about the slaw is that it cools your mouth when the spicy from the ribs and beans begin to grow. The beef brisket also rocks and I've heard several people say it's the best beef brisket they've had this side of Texas. For brisket fans, that's saying something. This is the 3rd time I've eaten at the Spotted Pig and each time the ribs were meaty, juicy, and tender. They know a good deal about how to cook excellent ribs. It's really good and a good value for your money. I'm glad they're here and with food like this and the growing number of folks who are finding out about the Spotted Pig, I think they're going to be here a good long while. It's worth stopping by if you are ANYWHERE near Lake Hartwell just inside South Carolina on Hwy 11.
